An article about our Brewer, Matt! Calvert Brewing head brewer taps his creativity for newest craft beers!

A great article from the Beer Spy!

"When people think great craft beer they think Colorado, California or Washington," he says. "Maryland should be on that list. We don't want it to just be [Calvert], but we want to be a part of that. We want to help make a name for Maryland beer."

The Beer Spy's Pick from Calvert Brewing: Chardonnay Tripel

Chardonnay Tripel is a standard Belgian Tripel, a style of beer made famous by Belgian Trappist monks, that has been aged in Chardonnay barrels from Maryland's Running Hare Winery.

Cookin' with beer!

It's getting cold, and nothing's better then a meal from your crock pot- unless it's got beer in it!

The crock pot is such a magical device...you throw ingredients in in the morning, go to work, and when you come home...dinner is served.  Also your house probably smells great, and you (usually) won't have much else to do to feast with little efforts after a long day.  And these days, it's a long, cold, windy day.

Check out this recipe for Crockpot Beer and Cheese Soup from Family Fresh Meals :

Crockpot Beer Cheese Soup
Ingredients:
32 oz chicken broth ( or veggie broth to make vegetarian friendly)
12 oz beer
1 cup of carrots, finely diced or shredded
1/2 cup celery, finely diced
1 cup onion finely diced
2-3 cloves of garlic, minced
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
3 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup cornstarch
Directions:
1. Place all chicken broth, beer, carrots, celery, onions, garlic, Worcestershire sauce and salt and pepper into your crockpot. Cover and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours.
2. Once time is up, remove lid and stir in shredded cheese, and heavy cream. Stir until cheese is melted. Next whisk in cornstarch. Recover and cook for 10-15 minutes longer.
3. For a smooth soup (which we prefer for this soup), use an blend soup in batches, or use an immersion blender before serving.
I served ours with fresh pretzel rolls from out local bakery.

Beer fights the flu? Who knew!?

Drink up!  Hoppy beers contain cold fighting ingredients according to this article from the Weekly Pint:

"According to AFP (Agence France-Presse), results of recent medical tests in Japan show that ingesting large amounts of humulone, the key ingredient in hops (which give beer aroma and bitterness), might help fend off a form of seasonal sickness in adults, specifically “RS”, or Respiratory Syncytial virus, which can lead to severe forms of pneumonia and bronchitis."

Last two Tap Takeovers of 2014!

Cheers! It's Thanksgiving!

Turkey, cranberries, stuffing...and beer of course!

Not sure what kind of beer to serve with your turkey?  Check out this article from The Weekly Pint to find some answers:

Daytime Drinking
You’re home, the game is on, everybody’s cracking beers. Just make sure you go for something low in ABV, like a good German-style helles, American pale ale, or session IPA. It’s going to be a long day, and you want to remember every bite.

Hors d’oeuvres, salads, & soft cheeses
As mentioned, saisons and other farmhouse ales, similar to bières de gardes, are great with salads. To step it up in the acidity department, look for geuze or other tart wild ales and lambics that boast complex, assertive, and mouth-watering flavors. A good, crisp pilsner can also match up with salads containing bitter greens like radicchio.

Main Course
With turkey, stuffing, and cranberry, richer, slightly fruity (but not bitter!) Belgian and American brown ales work well, while the tartness of cranberry cries out for coriander-kissed witbier. Flanders red, oud bruin, kriek, framboise, and other fruity, tangy wild ales can cut through the richness of stuffing and reset the palate over and again. It’s a feast. No one will mind if you have three different kinds of beer on the table.

Dessert
Old ales, quadrupels, and other strong, Belgian-style abbey ales will bring your second serving of apple or pecan pie and ice cream home with a bang. Rich, fruity double IPA pairs well with pumpkin pie. Fulsome, silky, rich coffee stouts like the incredible Peche Mortel from Dieu du Ciel! in Montreal taste like dessert in a glass.

Nightcap
What’s left? A nice bottle of Sierra Nevada Celebration? A light, dry Irish stout? Bingo. We like to wrap up with nice, dry Belgian pale ales like Orval and Flemish Kiss from The Commons. Now those are some great beers to be thankful for.

How to clean your Growler

If you're like me...you have several Calvert Brewing Company growlers laying around in your fridge, and maybe in your sink?

I have to admit, trying to figure out how to clean out my growler was sort of a puzzle at first...do you put it in the dishwasher?  (NO!)

Do you put soap in it?  (NO!)

So I turned to trusty old Google to help me figure out the answers.  And I came across the blog, The Best of Brews, and they gave me some pretty good advice.

Check out what they have to say about growler maintenance, and check out the rest of their site as well!  Then come in for a re-fill!

"Washing out a Growler is easy. But only if you do it right after you pour yourself that last beer. All it takes is a double rinse with hot water, and some drying time upside down in your dish drain (you know that plastic thing with holders for plates, glasses and now a GROWLER). (No soap please – it’s harder to rinse out than the beer, and makes your Growler smell all soapy.)"

Nick's IPA at Calvert Brewing Company

After 5 weeks hiatus Matt and Nick finally got the pilot system brewing again with none other than Nick's IPA.

We utilized Blichmann's Hop Rocket on this go round and that's Matt trying to get it circulating through the Hop Rocket.
